A scruffy guy with a beard who looked like he’d been on a motorcycle for the last twenty years came in. I expected him to go to Katrina, but he locked eyes with me. He had longish hair tinged with the very beginnings of gray, and dark, feral eyes. He was wearing jeans and a denim jacket and was accompanied by a plain-looking white woman in her forties wearing a long, puffy winter coat.

Something clicked between us, some inexplicable chemisty. Suddenly, it was hard to look away.

I went into my booth, and he met me on the other side. Twenty dollars came through the slot—it figured he’d want the cheaper show. “Ten dollars in the machine,” I said to him, through the wall, and I heard him ask the woman he came in with for some money, and then shut the door. I adjusted my violet wig and straightened my fishnets while waiting. When the window slid up, he was staring at me with that odd, intense gaze.

“Oh, man,” he rasped, his entire body vibrating with manic energy. “Do you realize you hypnotize men every day with your eyes?”

“Actually, I don’t,” I said. “It’s pretty slow.”

“You’re a writer, aren’t you,” he said.

“No.”

“No, you are—I can see it in your eyes. You ever write stuff about this place?”

“Oh . . . no.” Why was everyone accusing me of writing today? I hadn’t published a single thing since I moved to New York.

“You should, man. You really should. Ya know?”

“What do you do?” I asked.

“Actor, comedian. Mostly comedian. Just recorded something for HBO. Lucky Louie. You ever seen it?”

“I don’t have cable.”

“You should come down and see me sometime. I’m doing a standup show this weekend.”
